Since when is a free lunch REALLY a free lunch?
Every Monday at my company we have these little lunch meetings (that are supposedly optional) where we try to better ourselves for our work life/personal life. We are attempting to "Sharpen Our Saw" if you will. Laughter is expected, but they offer you a free lunch, hence my motivation to go. Anything to avoid my Kroger bagged lunch.
Pizza or Mr. Pita is usually provided, along with my much adored Diet Coke for this hour long meeting. Free lunch... right? WRONG. It is one of the most mind-numbingly boring hour of my life. I had to sit there while some lady rambled on for an hour about organization. My cubicle is the most organized on this floor, probably in this building, so the point of my attendance was non-existent, except to get the free lunch.
Now if we really break this down, a slice of pizza or a pita from Mr. pita can't be more than a few bucks, and the diet coke is probably about $1.25. So in essence I'm being paid $3.25 for one hour of being bored. With this new realization that I'm being paid $3.25 an hour to be bored to tears, I am now thinking to myself (and to you)"I wouldn't take a job that paid me less than $12 per hour... why would I stoop this low for a free lunch?"
I don't think I'll be going anymore... but if they ever serve Filet Mignon w/ a side of wild rice and steamed vegetables with a nice glass of red... maybe I'll re-consider. That's gotta be at least $12... right?

Now I realize that depending wear you live the cost of living fluctuates, but your pizza analysis seems pretty much right on to my area. What ever restaurant you are buying that $12.00 steak dinner at I would check to see if it passed the health codes. I would say more like $18 to $24, lets be honest you deserve to be on the high end of that not the low. On another note thought, it does get you out of your cube at lunch; however pizza on regular bases isn't the healthiest. It is good every now and then. It's not like you have something better to do at lunch, like respond to people who comment on your blog.
I do find it funny that they(the comapnay) try and sell the occasional lunch as a benefit, like health insurance.
